This creamy French onion steak is deliciously warming, perfect for cooler nights when you want something filling and easy to prepare. Whack everything in the slow cooker and enjoy the tasty fruits of your labour a few hours later. - Greer Worsley
Ingredients
-
2 brown onions, sliced
-
2 cloves garlic, sliced
-
1kg beef rump steak
-
20g butter
-
1 tbsp olive oil
-
40g sachet French onion soup mix
-
125ml cream
-
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
4 sprigs fresh thyme
Method
-
Place onions and garlic in the bowl of a slow cooker.
-
Cut rump steak into large pieces. Season well with salt and pepper.
-
Melt butter with oil in a large nonstick frypan over medium heat. Brown steak for 1-2 minutes each side, then transfer to a slow cooker.
-
Whisk together French onion soup mix with 375ml boiling water. Stir through cream and Worcestershire sauce, then pour over steak and onions. Add thyme.
-
Cook for 3-4 hours on high, until meat is tender.
-
Serve with potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables.
Equipment
-
Slow cooker
-
Fry pan
Notes
- Rump steak is the perfect cut of meat for this dish because it responds well to slow cooking, but doesn't need as long as a cheaper cut such as round or chuck steak. You could use scotch fillet as well.
